Book of the Week: The Three Billy Goats Gruff

This week, we are going to review The Three Billy Goats Gruff (Read it Yourself Level - 1).
Like I said earlier, L began reading on her own and so we have been concentrating on Level 1 books which will motivate and help her nurture early reading skills.

This book indeed is a great book for children who begin with reading own their own. The story is a much shortened version of the original. The lines are rhyming, vocabulary is very simple and easy to read like "up, over, middle, big, goat, gruff, troll etc". These words are repeated many times across the book helping the little reader to reinforce the reading skills.

When she saw "goat" for example, in the first place she read each letter with related phonic sound, the same was repeated in the second instance, but when she reached the third instance she was quickly able to recognize the word as a whole.

Each page designed with limited words and good visuals. The visuals portray the story very well. I am sure even toddlers would enjoy reading the book.

The story is about three billy goats who have to cross a bridge to eat grass and there lives a fearsome troll underneath the bridge. The story unveils how each goat saves himself from the mouth of the troll and in a very simple way.

We also loved the questionnaire at the end which asks quick questions to recall the learning and find the order of pictures in the story. Liya did well with both of these at her first attempt itself.
