Book of the Week ~ Dog Wants to Play!

Dog Wants to PlayLet me introduce you another book, which Liya is fond of. The book is 'Dog wants to Play' by Christine McDonnell

About the book..? I picked it from West Seneca public library. Liya loves puppies and thought this would be an interesting read for her. I must say, my assumption was just right!

The story is around a doggie, who desperately wants to play and pleading to everyone to come together and play with him all day. But the kitten, lamb, pig, calf, hare and chick... all say a big NO, adding 'their own' reasons. For example kitten is afraid that he might get bitten, lamb is too shy.. etc. Finally, someone is taking a plunge to play with puppy.... who is that- an energetic child!

Mommy thoughts...?
It is another interesting book with lovely illustrations and impressive layout design. I liked the 'rhyming responses' from each friend. Few downsides, I felt are -

  •  It is another 'wide and long' sized book, 10 inches width and hence 20  inches wide when it's  kept open. So not very handy for young kids.
  • Not a board book
  • Even when the story moves along with the lamp, (I felt that) almost half part of the lamp is unseen {might be to prove that lamp is shy, but I guess there are numerous ways to portray shyness, not just by hiding a part}.
Liya's take...?   This would definitely be another unforgettable book for her. She loves filling in the blanks as I 'rhyme' the lines. She loves the doggie and kitten, identifies lamp as sheep, calf as cow, and child as baby. {don't make much difference, though}.

  1. This book looks too cute. I think that my son would love it! He loves anything with a dog on it, which is funny because he wants nothing to do with a real dog! haha! I may have to look into checking out this book for him! It looks like your little one really loved it! Too cute!

  4. Visiting from VB. My two sons love animals, so this would have been a perfect fit for them when they were little. Developing a passion for reading is so important. It's great when you child connects to a book, expresses his or her imagination, and most importantly sees that reading can be fun. Enjoy!

  7. Looks like a nice book! My girls have just grown out of all their books like this - and it was sad to see them go after many years of happy reading together! It's kind of sad when they can read by themselves - fortunately they still like us reading them stories at bedtime so we still get to rediscover favorites from our childhood!
