Learning to Tell the Time!

Learning to tell the time is quite challenging for a preschooler. Moreover, unlike us, our children are more adapted to digital devices at such an early age that they really do not find enough motivation to tell the time in an analog clock. Whenever Liya wants to find out time she pulls out my phone or tab and reads it out. That's where I told her we will make a clock that would help her read time in an analog clock...

You may read the part 2 here.

Here you go!

Momma cut the circles. Girl did pasting and coloring. Momma did writing (please excuse my handwriting).

Three mistakes we did in this, probably will not repeat in the next session. (IA)
  • The numbers 40, 45, 50, 55 should have written in the reverse direction so that it would not have appeared reversed as seen here. Given that my preschooler is already into reading and writing in reverse, at times, she reads 45 as 54 etc.
  • The seconds dial should have been in green so that the visual clue is set to map it with green letters in the yellow patch
  • The spacing between numbers do not seems to be even.
However, Liya is now able to tell the time by moving her clock dials as per analog clock. She is all excited!

Liya taught Momma a lesson - how to recycle the "mess we created". She did a collage from the waste paper cuttings to teach Momma "this is how waste gets accumulated if we throw them out". She also made some kites from the leftover paper. I loved these ideas. :)
Happy Wednesday!

  15. That is such a great idea! I'm sure I have an Usborne book somewhere with a clock with turning hands but I like the idea of creating a clock with them - JJ is 4 now and definitely knows his numbers up to 12 (and sometimes beyond!) so this would be good for him I think... #CreativeChallenge

    1. What I found interesting about making a clock to teach L about time is that she got to involve in making and which motivates her to "use her-own" creations in learning. I am sure using a book with inbuilt clock is indeed helpful. However, putting some effort in making our own gives loads of insights to little ones. Happy learning JJ!

  17. What a fab clock! My Preschooler and I are learning to tell the time too and we made a clock using stones and rocks. We have a teaching clock similar to this too. I find playing games helps with the learning as telling the time is such a difficult concept for some kids

  18. I remember doing this as a project in school when I was like 9 or 10. Brings back memories and then now I can share it with my toddler.

Its .. amazing! I didn't know that there will be a time when I can share things to my son.

    Nice blog post =)
