Book of the Week : : Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you See?

Hello All,
It's Wednesday- time to share our 'story reading' through the week. So, what were we reading this week? Well, it was 'Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you See?' - a picture book by Bill Martin Jr.

Mommy's take on the book?  It is a picture book designed to help kids (mainly toddlers) associate colors and names to particular objects. The book 'rhymes' as if asking to various animals 'what do they see..' with a response which links to another animal (mostly) and ending up with teacher and children. The characters in the rhyme are Brown Bear, Red Bird, Yellow Duck, Blue Horse, Green Frog, Purple Cat, White Dog, Black Sheep, a Goldfish, a teacher and students.

I am sure she did not learn colors - that's absolutely fine as she is too young to learn/I didn't want her either-  but she can recognize few animals as the rhyme progresses. Moreover, she is getting more and more closer to books and reading.

How did we go about?
We did not have the hard copy book and hence this time it was completely e-reading and e-story telling. We were listening to the youtube video narrated by the author and we did have PowerPoint version of the same as well.
I downloaded PPT, somehow I did not like the pictures in it. So I googled and found some interesting sketches and replaced in each page. We ran it in slideshow mode and Liya and I sang (:D) along.

Liya's take...?  Needless to say, she enjoyed it. She shouts 'I saw a..'  whenever she hears 'what do you see...' But I must say she would have been much happier if she was given a hard copy. Honestly I do not want to rent a cargo 'container' to carry her books and toys back to India, as we would be leaving USA in few months, Insha Allah!

  1. MashaAllah, you and Liya had some great reading fun. How innovative of you to find another way to pass this story on to Liya *KUDOS*

My computer issues are getting better (hubby's a life-saver).

  2. Oh, and Liya may not have learned her colours, but there is a lot that the little ones are picking up from us mommies reading to them.

Over all at their age, I think the memories are more precious than anything else.

  3. Salma, moms have to be innovative in this era I guess.. ;)

You are right, Reading isn't all about 'learning' as we do in schools- it should open up the space for boundless imagination. That's the real learning and exploring we moms should be focused on...we can not confine our children to our own ways of thinking and imagining- they are individuals (many times) with much powerful ideas and thinking level than we ever assumed of!
